Gold King Holly – Ilex x altaclerensis
Gold King Holly is very hardy and tolerates most soils. Its leaves produce a golden-yellow edge. They grow best in moist but well-drained soil in either sunlight or partial shade.
Plant Guide
This potted Gold King Holly can be grown any time of the year.
Remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your planting spot. Dig a hole as deep as your roots and roughly twice as wide. Mix 50% of the original soil with high-quality compost.
Gold King Holly plant does best in soils which are moist but must have good drainage. If your soil is waterlogged, the plant will not flourish and you may need to install drainage.
Best Uses
With its prickly nature, Ilex x altaclerensis is the perfect solution for a barrier that wards off intruders. However, with good pruning, it can make a great decorative hedge.
Care Advice
If you have planted in spring/summer make sure to water the plant well for the first couple of months, if planted in Autumn or Winter you may not need to water it much.
Gold King Holly requires minimal maintenance, only needing pruning in early spring. It’s berries may cause an upset stomach if digested, be sure to wear gloves when handling.

Ilex x altaclerensis is most regularly planted on its own as either a hedge or as standalone shrubs.
