Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica) boasts these glossy, deep-green leaves that stay green all year round, and you can’t miss those beautiful red stems. In summer, you’ll be treated to lovely, fragrant white flowers, followed by black fruits in the autumn. The best part is, this shrub isn’t picky at all! It thrives in just about any site or soil. Oh, and did I mention it can grow up to 6 meters if you let it, but fear not, it has a slow growth that can easily be shaped.
Plant Guide
If you want it as a winter feature, plant it in a more open position in retentive soil that doesn’t get too wet in winter. If topiarising, clip three times a year (February, June and October) to keep the shape crisp. Otherwise leave it to mature. Bear in mind that an unclipped specimen needs more space to shine. Portuguese Laurel can also be used as a hedge. Plant 75cm apart and clip every June. Planted small it can tolerate dry shade.
