Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is the most widely used hedge plant in the UK. It is fast growing, hence the name quickthorn. It is tough, happy in almost any soil and easy to clip. A well-grown hawthorn hedge is so dense that it is hard to see through even in winter, when it is leafless.
White blossom in spring, glossy green leaves through summer and bright red haws in autumn. Use it on its own or as part of a mixed native hedge.
These plants are bare root and 2-3ft. You buy them in packs of 10 to 200. We recommend 5 plants per metre, planted in two staggered rows 30cm apart.
The 2-3ft plants give you more height from day one. The 40-60cm size costs less per plant and suits longer runs or tighter budgets.
