Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a dense, dark, thorny native that can grow into a small tree of 6 to 7 metres with a wide, spreading habit. Clusters of white flowers open in March and April, well before the small, toothed leaves. Thorns of around 2 to 2.5cm line the tangled branches, making an impenetrable barrier.
The fruit are sloes: small, round berries with dark purple to black skin, used for preserves, wine and most often to flavour sloe gin. Early flowers give nectar and pollen in spring, and the fruit feeds birds and small mammals. Blackthorn copes with most soils except acid soils, resists gales and salt-laden winds, and does less well in shade. It spreads readily, so give it room.
These plants are bare root and 2-3ft.

Is blackthorn the same as sloe?

Most soil types except acid soils. It is resistant to gales and salt-laden winds but can struggle in shade.

Is blackthorn a good security hedge?
Its thorns of around 2 to 2.5cm make a dense, impenetrable barrier.
