Description

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a native, deciduous hedge with pale grey bark and yellow autumn colour. It makes a fantastic formal hedge, it is great for pleaching, and it is hardy to wind and cold.

These plants are bare root and 2-3ft. You buy them in packs of 10 to 100. We recommend planting 3 to 4 per metre.

The 2-3ft plants give you more height from day one. The 40-60cm size costs less per plant and suits longer runs or tighter budgets.

Soak the roots for 1 to 2 hours, spread them out in a trench or hole, backfill, firm gently, water well and mulch.

Hornbeam is deciduous, but a clipped hornbeam hedge often holds its dead brown leaves through winter until new growth pushes them off in spring.
